- Are you aged 15-25?
- Are you sexually active?
- Have you thought about being tested for chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection that in three-quarters of cases causes no symptoms. Long term infection with chlamydia can cause infertility and ongoing pelvic and testicular inflammation and pain. Often the only way of picking it up early is to screen for it.
Many people are put off being tested for chlamydia because they may worry that the test will be painful or embarrassing.
The NHS National Screening Programme, which St. Neots Surgery is now a member of, understands this. It is entirely confidential and enables you to test yourself in a pain-free manner without having to make a doctor or nurse appointment. Testing packs (blue for male, pink for female) are available at reception and within consultation rooms. You can choose whether to send off the sample yourself or to use the practice courier. You will be notified personally of the result within a week. Further information is available at the NHS Choices Website or through the Plymouth Chlamydia Screening Office tel. 01752 434 865
Please note that the screening programme only tests for chlamydia in people without any symptoms. If you have significant symptoms such as pelvic pain or irregular bleeding or are keen on a more comprehensive check-up it would be more appropriate to book for a full sexual health check either with the doctor or nurse at St. Neots or through the Derriford GUM Clinic.
